P. 6

Dear student ...

This book is a Supplement to help you and your teacher save valuable time during
          lessons.
          It includes:

definitions of all the words and expressions in the student’s Text Book, as well as those
in the Exercise Book. As you will see, first there are the definitions of all the words in
the specific text they are found in, while often there are also one or two of the most
           common uses of the word.
grammar notes which briefly explain the grammatical elements in each unit.
an alphabetical vocabulary list with reference to the unit, book (Text Book or Exercise
Book) and section (for example, A-H) in which the word appears, so that the word can
be contextualised and then translated correctly.

Nuovissimo Progetto italiano 1 is a stimulating and interesting book, containing standard
modern Italian texts and dialogues. As you will see, a few new words appear in each unit,
making this supplement even more useful. Please note, however, that it is not necessary
to memorise all of the vocabulary. Your teacher knows exactly which and how many
words you will need each time, and when you will need to learn them.
Moreover, it is very important to be able to understand a text (written or oral) even if there
are words you don’t know because, quite simply, it’s going to happen: you will have to be
able to “decode” each new text based on the context. Developing this ability is one of the
aims of Nuovissimo Progetto italiano 1. Therefore, there’s no need to be anxious or feel
insecure when faced with new words: no one expects you to know them all.

Warning! It’s best not to use the Supplement to look at the vocabulary in the next unit and
then “prepare it”, because by doing so the new dialogue becomes much less interesting
and, above all, it loses its educational value. Finally, the Supplement is not intended as a
replacement for a (good) dictionary, which you will you definitely need the more you learn
about the Italian language and culture.

          Good luck and have fun.
          Telis Marin
